Make Every Lesson SOGI-Inclusive

We know that as an educator, you have a lot on your plate. You don’t need a full curriculum of new SOGI-specific lesson plans in order to be inclusive – you can simply make tweaks to what you are already delivering.

The following suggestions come from educators and students who have noticed the profound difference a small change can make.

Change up your word problems

1. Math, physics, or any other class that uses word problems can provide an opening for SOGI-inclusive education.
2. Instead of “Johnny was taking the train to visit his grandmother,” as the set-up for a problem, try “Khaleel was going to visit his boyfriend.”

Use singular “they”

1. Casually introducing the use of singular gender-neutral pronouns (they, them, theirs) in class will signal to students that you are a supportive adult and make it easier for them to use when it matters.
2. Whenever a person’s gender is unknown or undefined, simply refer to the person as “them.”
