What is SOGI?
Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity
“Sexual orientation and gender identity” (SOGI) is a term used by the BC Human Rights Code to describe an area of prohibited discrimination. It is an inclusive term that encompasses all individuals regardless of where they identify on the sexual orientation or gender identity spectrums, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, two-spirit, heterosexual, and cisgender.
Why 1 2 3?
Systemic change is happening. There are three types of resources to share from SOGI-inclusive schools and educators.
Policies & Procedures
“I believe that more direct and accessible support in high school contributes to a safer environment for students. Recognizing that students’ understanding of queer issues is less sophisticated at younger ages, more work needs to be done in developing tools to make a difference in the lives of youth as early as possible to prevent homophobic attitudes from becoming a routine school experience.”

SOGI 1 2 3 is new.
It will grow based on educator needs and feedback.
“Individual teachers are improving with regards to addressing homophobic and transphobic harassment issues. I believe that we need to do more intensive training about LGBTQ issues so that more staff feel comfortable enough to address homo/transphobic harassment in their classrooms and the common areas of the school.”

Who We Are
SOGI 1 2 3 was created by ARC Foundation in collaboration with the BC Ministry of Education, BC Teachers' Federation, UBC Faculty of Education, and local, national and international LGBTQ community organizations. We look forward to collaborating with school districts across BC, BC Principal's and Vice-Principal's Association, BC School Superintendents Association, BC School Trustees Association and BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils. We are working together to address the immediate need to support marginalized LGBTQ students by effecting rapid and progressive change in attitudes, policies, and practices toward creating safer and more inclusive school environments for all students.
SOGI IN ACTION
The SOGI Education Leadership Summit took place in Burnaby, BC, on October 21, 2016. Over 140 passionate educators from the nine school districts participating in the ARC Foundation SOGI pilot (now the BC SOGI Educator Network) came together to explore opportunities for increasing SOGI capacity and enhancing the student experience within their schools. Speakers included Hon. Mike Bernier, Education Minister; Glen Hansman, BC Teachers' Federation President; and Tru Wilson, Trans Youth Advocate.
See below for a summary report, highlight video and some photos from the day.
“The most beneficial part of the SOGI Education Leadership Summit was being reminded of the importance of this work and knowing that I don't have to be an expert to affect change.”
