Student Support Plan

While SOGI-inclusive education improves safety and belonging for all students, students who socially transition at school have a particular need for support. A school-based support plan can be the guiding document that creates a shared understanding among school staff, students, and parents for each individual student who transitions at school.

Consider including the following sections in the plan.

• Parent/guardian involvement – how supportive is the student’s home environment?

• Confidentiality – how public or private will information about the student’s gender be?Integrate books throughout.

• Names, pronouns, and student records – what will be changed where?

• Sibling considerations – if the student has siblings at the school, are they connected with this process?…and create displays!

In addition, Gender Spectrum, a US-based organization, has created this template for a Gender Support Plan. This template is quite extensive and assumes US language and school structure – don’t be overwhelmed on first glance! Instead let this be a helpful starting point with which to make a personalized version for your school or district.
