Supporting Professional Development in Alberta

Our Alberta SOGI 123 Lead recently developed a comprehensive Professional Development Kit tailored to one of the Alberta school divisions we support. This innovative resource combines our five foundational Learning Bursts, leverages our updated SOGI 123 website, and includes additional professional development modules inspired by feedback from previous training sessions in the region.

Designed to empower School SOGI Leads, the kit helps educators identify unique strengths and learning opportunities within their own school and select professional development modules that meet their colleagues at their learning edge. 

This fall, the kit was introduced to the divisions’ SOGI team – including over 30 School Leads – through a 90-minute training session, as well as a follow up training to the school divisions principals and vice-principals’ counsel.

The trainings available to School Leads focus on: 

• Elementary-specific workshops, providing practical strategies for younger learners. 
• Navigating challenging SOGI conversations, offering tools to address questions with empathy and confidence. 
• Intersectionality, exploring how overlapping identities shape student experiences and how schools can better support diverse communities.
