The Yukon SOGI Educator Network brings together Yukon educators interested in supporting SOGI-inclusive education.

Our Work in the Yukon

The Yukon SOGI Educator Network brings together Yukon educators interested in supporting SOGI-inclusive education. It enables these educators to meet, share experiences, co-create resources, and collectively overcome obstacles within the Department of Education as well as in schools across the Territory, including the First Nations School Board and French School Boards schools. Department Leads are supported through access to an expansive collection of emerging SOGI tools to adapt to the needs of their schools.

The Yukon SOGI Educator Network was launched at the beginning of the 2023/2024 school year in partnership with the Department of Education. This partnership is part of an effort to foster inclusivity as part of the Territory’s LGBTQ2S+ Action Plan, a 5-year plan launched in 2021. In August 2023, the Government of Yukon updated the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Policy for schools, in an effort to ensure that students and staff in all Yukon schools feel safe, respected and included.

We would like to express our gratitude for the guidance and support from education and community leaders that informed the introduction of SOGI 123 in Yukon Territory. We would also like to thank the Yukon’s Department of Education for their ongoing support of SOGI 123.

Educators participate in the network within one of the following roles:

  1. SOGI DEPARTMENT LEAD – This position is appointed centrally by Department of Education. The Department Leads raise awareness of SOGI in schools by developing department-wide initiatives and recruiting, training, and supporting School Leads. Department Leads have dedicated hours for this role, attend regular network meetings, and are part of the Department of Education.
  2. SOGI SCHOOL LEAD – Any Yukon educator can participate as a School Lead. The School Leads raise awareness of SOGI within their schools by sharing, implementing, and developing SOGI-inclusive practices and initiatives. School Leads can be teachers, administrators, teacher-librarians, counsellors, or any other staff role in a school.
