How to Customize SOGI 1 2 3 Resources for YOUR Classroom

SOGI 1 2 3 provides ready-to-use, grade-appropriate SOGI-inclusive resources and lesson plans that are designed to align with local school curriculum. While most of our lesson plans were created in British Columbia, teachers can adapt or adopt SOGI 1 2 3 lesson plans to meet the needs of their individual classrooms.

We know how important it is for students to see themselves and their local communities reflected in their learning, which is why we encourage you to customize the materials available to meet the needs of your classroom. We also believe that there is tremendous value in meeting people where they are at on their learning journey in order to create spaces for students and educators to learn alongside one another.

Here are some considerations for customization:

  • Look at your local curriculum and see where the existing SOGI 1 2 3 lesson plans may support your core competencies and desired learning outcomes.

  • Review more closely the SOGI 1 2 3 lesson plans / resources of interest and flag any references or examples that may not resonate with your students, either due to geographical references or unfamiliar terminology.

  • Consider whether these flagged examples need to be modified / changed out, or if additional context would enhance the overall learning experience.

  • Look for opportunities to add in local examples, or to tie into other conversations/lessons that may be relevant to the current teaching.

  • Looking to collaborate? Reach out to an educator colleague or supportive parent volunteer to engage in the process!
