Alberta’s Education Amendment Act, 2024
We understand that the language around Alberta’s Education Amendment Act, 2024 (formerly Bill 27) has been confusing. These two complementary resources were designed to help educators in Alberta navigate what has and has not changed with the introduction of the Education Amendment Act, 2024.
We want to highlight some of the amazing things Alberta educators can continue doing to make their classrooms, schools, and communities more SOGI-inclusive! This resource speaks to what has not changed since the passing of the Education Amendment Act, 2024. These “green flags” serve as reminders of the many ways educators can still affirm and protect students of all sexual orientations and gender identities in Alberta schools.
This complementary resource provides a clear roadmap to help educators in Alberta navigate what has changed since the passing of the Education Amendment Act, 2024. These rights and supports apply to all students in Alberta. Cultural naming practices and community support structures should always be honoured. Particular attention should be given to peoples and communities historically underserved or harmed by educational institutions, such as First Nations, Métis, and Inuit.
