Creating SOGI-Inclusive Libraries

Libraries are often safe spaces for children and youth. Students can see themselves and their experiences reflected in a good book and learn about the many possibilities that exist in the world.

There are plenty of excellent SOGI-inclusive books for students of all ages to choose from! Teacher Librarians have learned through trial and error, and have shared these recommendations to keep your school’s collections inclusive and available to students:

Stay current

• There has been a proliferation in SOGI-inclusive YA and Children’s Literature in recent years. Check out our book lists for the latest recommendations:
  • SOGI Books for Elementary School
  • SOGI Books for Middle School
  • SOGI Books for Secondary School
• This new variety offers opportunities to showcase books about a diversity of characters having a multitude of adventures. Libraries have a responsibility to represent as many perspectives and experiences as possible.

Integrate books throughout

• Including SOGI-inclusive books throughout your collection normalizes them as it demonstrates that they are like every other book and are available for everyone to read.
• Some schools have placed blue dots on books or created pamphlets to direct students that are specifically looking for SOGI-themed stories. Grouping them together or marking them with a rainbow sticker may help some students find the books, but others may avoid them if they fear being labeled a certain way just for reading them.

…and create displays!

• There is nothing wrong with a loud and proud display when the timing is right (e.g. during Pride or another special event).
• Displays can send the message that the school or library is a SOGI-inclusive space.
