SOGI-Inclusive Classroom Checklist in Action
A group of SOGI-inclusive educators worked together to create a checklist that teachers can implement today. These actions ensure students see themselves reflected in their classrooms while providing a mirror for other students to see the diversity that exists in the world. The checklist includes simple changes you can take today to make your classroom more inclusive of all sexual orientations and gender identities that fit into three themes:
A book doesn’t have to be “about” SOGI to be SOGI-inclusive (though it can and that is worthwhile too!). There has been a major uptick in the number of children’s and YA SOGI-inclusive books lately. Check out our booklist to see just a few.
Move beyond the binary by finding ways to include all students when you speak, and to avoid assumptions about how students might identify. Whenever possible, refer to groups of students without using gendered terms – try “Good morning class,” instead of “Good morning boys and girls”.
Even if something is true for the majority, assuming that it will apply to each student can cause harm. Take each student as they are and take every opportunity to encourage students to do the same with their peers.
