SOGI-Inclusive Education in the Yukon
We’re pleased to share that the Yukon has joined the SOGI 123 Network! In 2023, ARC Foundation welcomed our first territorial SOGI 123 Lead in the Yukon. We’re excited to be collaborating with the Yukon Department of Education to bring inclusive education, support, and resources to northern communities.
Our SOGI 123 Lead – Yukon has already made strides in fostering safer and more inclusive schools in the region through the delivery of professional development presentations for Yukon educators, and establishing a professional community of learning where educators can support each other and learn together. We look forward to further establishing the SOGI Educator Network, and supporting the many SOGI Champions in the Territory.
Much of the progress related to SOGI-inclusion in the Yukon has been championed by students – particularly the Porter Creek Secondary School GSA. They’ve opened the territory’s first Rainbow Rooms, successfully petitioned the government to ban conversion therapy before it was banned nationally, spoken up against harmful narratives, and called for safer school spaces. The Porter Creek GSA has truly led the way in championing SOGI-inclusion, and their efforts were recognized with the Yukonstruct Hall of Innovators Youth/Emerging Leaders Notable Innovators Award. Way to go, PCSS GSA!
